Alta has taken the Tesla approach and applied steroids. Because it’s essential to keep the cells cool, Alta has designed features that conduct heat from the cells to the lightly finned aluminum case that surrounds them. This is very much an air-cooled battery, sitting in the same place in the chassis as once did air-cooled engines. Because it’s in a motocross bike, the battery pack was developed to survive 20 Gs—twice the force typically seen in the highest Supercross jump landing. And because it’s in an off-road machine designed to cross creeks and to be pressure-washed after rides, the pack is rated at IP67 (International Protection Marking code), which means it’s designed to survive half an hour under 1 meter of water. It’s an impressive engineering achievement.
